Knowledge & Biodiversity
S&B - Savoirs & biodiversité (Knowledge & Biodiversity) is a nonprofit organization
We focus on human and animal cultures and practices, as well as the interactions that connect living beings to one another and to their environment, which they contribute to shape.
We pay a particular attention to the knowledge developed by humans and animals in relation to natural resources, especially in the fields of health and food, and to the preservation of these resources and the associated knowledge,
as well as to their transmission. We develop projects in collaboration with the communities that produce and hold this knowledge, in order to contribute, in a global context of change in traditional societies, to support this traditionnal knowledge and ensure its transmission and dissemination, particularly to younger generations.
Our activities are divided into four domains:
Research:
Conducting research related to our themes, as to take inventory of the natural resources used by humans and animals and to document the associated traditional knowledge and the cultural frameworks within which it is embedded.
Preserving the vitality of local cultures:
Support or lead activities and projects related to the preservation of ecosystems that shelter the resources upon which human and animal life depends and around which local cultures are built.
Promote the transfer of knowledge associated with these resources and their adaptation when they are threatened, particularly by changing lifestyles, population movements, and sudden environmental changes linked to ecological disturbances, etc.
Training:
Support and contribute to the training of researchers and experts, particularly at the local level, in the fields that constitute our mission.
Dissemination:
Conduct public awareness campaigns on the themes that constitute our mission
Make the data collected during our studies and the results of their analysis available to the communities concerned, decision-making bodies, and the scientific community.
